Alexander Keirincx

(Antwerp 1600–1652 Amsterdam) Wide northern English landscape with an artist sketching a distant town, monogrammed lower centre: AK (ligated), oil on panel, 45.5 x 68.6 cm, framed,

Provenance: Collection of King Charles I of England (a fragment of his seal on reverse); Christie’s auction, London, 15.04. 1992, lot 108; German private collection.

Literaturee: M. Whinney and O. Millar, English Art 1625 - 1714, 1957, p. 262; O. Millar, Catalogue of the Collections of King Charles I, The Walpole Society, XXXVII, 1960, p. 160; O. Millar, The Inventories and Valuations of the King’s Goods 1649–1651, The Walpole Society, XLIII, 1970/ 72, p. 278; J. Harris, The Artist and the Country House, 1979, pp. 11, 26, 27 and 29. In 1639 Charles I rented a studio in Orchard Street, London, where he provided working accommodation for the Netherlandish painters, Cornelis van Poelenburgh and Alexander Keirincx. Keirincx was commissioned by the King to paint a series of views of northern English landscapes and cityscapes. He produced four paintinghs, which were originally hung in Whitehall Palace, but were sold to the art dealer, Remigius van Leemput when the King was deposed and executed. All four have turned up again over the course of time: 'Richmond Castle/Yorkshire' is held by the Yale Center for British Art, a 'View of Pontefract' and the 'View of an English Royal Palace' were auctioned by Christie’s, London, on 11 April 1986 as lots 2 and 3 along with the painting offered here. It is probable that Keirincx accompanied King Charles and his troops on their journey north. The sketches were produced in situ and then worked up as paintings in the London studio. They number amongst the earliest views of English royal palaces.
